Recording and streaming talks.

Tools

• OBS - Free, works great. Stream to YouTube or wherever.
• Venueless - Lets remote people watch and participate alongside in-person folks.
• Jitsi - Free video calls, good for Q&A.

Think about

Streaming

• Live streaming lets remote people join.
• Takes bandwidth and someone needs to babysit it.
• Having videos archived is worth doing.

Quality

• 1080p is fine.
• Watch your bandwidth and storage.

Where to put videos

• YouTube, PeerTube, or your own server.
• Add transcripts so people can read along.
• Some conferences sell early access, then release for free later.

Permission

• Ask people before recording them.
• If someone says no recording, don’t record their session.
• Don’t show faces of people in the background who didn’t agree.

In practice

• Get someone on it - Have one person in charge of video setup and streaming.
• Test first - Test everything before you go live. Audio always breaks.
• Have backups - Backup microphone, backup cable, backup streaming link.
• Decide who edits - Before the event, figure out who’ll edit, caption, and upload.

Remote people

• Video rooms - Let people at home join breakout sessions.
• Chat - Some platforms let in-person and remote people chat together.
• Everyone watches - Record everything. People can watch later if they missed it.
