Overview

Getting people to help out.

Finding volunteers

• Just ask - “Hey, can you help us with this? We need people” works. People like being asked.
• Want, not because of obligation - Look for people who actually want to help, not people doing it because they feel like they have to.
• Make it visible - Let people know you need help. A lot of times they want to pitch in but don’t know how to offer.

Keeping it fair

• Spread it out - Don’t let 2 people do everything while others do nothing.
• Some structure helps - You need to organize who’s doing what, but it doesn’t need to be complicated.
• Give something back - Discounts or credit toward future conferences work.

What people can do

• Check-in desk - Registration, badges, that sort of thing.
• Run sessions - Help keep conversations on track, manage time.
• Show people around - Help newcomers find their way.
• Tours - Volunteer-led walks around the city or venue.
• Setup and cleanup - Getting things ready and tearing down after.

Treat people right

• Volunteers set the mood. Treat them well.
• Make it fun, not a burden.
• Say thank you publicly.
• Ask them what they think about decisions.
